JOB DESCRIPTION

Provides information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses. Laboratory services must meet professionally approved standards according to state & federal law.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this job description include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.

  • Performs requested pathological procedures under limited supervision and according to policies and procedures in a timely manner.

  • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, instruments, and other products.

  • Coordinates simultaneous tests with accuracy.

  • Maintains adequate supply levels and prepares evaluations on new products, supplies, and/or equipment as requested.

  • Inspects and maintains instruments and equipment in proper working order.

  • Maintains a neat and clean work environment.

  • Working with other hospital staff members to provide quality patient care and maintain a positive, professional working environment.

  • Provides for patients’/significant others’ or legal representative rights and safety & notifications; strives to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal, regulatory, federal and state standards.

  • Provides a safe environment by monitoring blood exposure of staff and patients; keeping free from hazards for patients and personnel.

  • Initiate, interpret and enforce Laboratory Services procedures and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.

  • Maintains current competency by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies

  • Functions as a contributing team member & communicates effectively with all levels of people.

  • Promotes positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community.

  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • MLS/MT Certification through ASCP, AMT, AAB, or another approved certifying organization required or must obtain within three months of hire.

  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, and specific clinical laboratory technology as well as ability to recognize abnormal test results and ability to operate laboratory computerized equipment at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Medical Technology, BS in Clinical Laboratory Science.

  • Six to twelve months of job experience is preferred to acquire thorough knowledge of a variety of laboratory testing procedures, proper specimen handling, and to be able to perform more complex testing procedures.

  • Knowledge of hospital and health care practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to a Georgia Department of Human Services/Department of Community Health healthcare facility, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and DNV regulatory requirements

  • Ability to:

    • determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations

    • work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude

    • manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work

    • maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information

    • complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner

    • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing/electronically

    • handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner

  • Provide excellent customer service skills and basic computer skills required

  • Possesses good interpersonal skills, initiative, integrity, flexibility, adaptability, and must be a team player
