JOB DESCRIPTION


TATTNALL COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERSROAD DEPT FULL TIME - EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 4

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for operating a Back Hoe and trencher under limited supervision. It may also include the operation of a variety of moderately heavy-duty construction equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Independently operates a back hoe on a specified route. Records roads graded and recommends maintenance needed on roads, which includes needed fill material, outfall ditch maintenance, pipe replacements and sign replacements.

  • Operates one or more of the following types of equipment to facilitate department work processes safely and efficiently: back hoe, dump truck, low boy, front-end loader, trenching machine, and other related equipment.

  • Operates a variety of handheld tools and equipment such as a chain saw, shovel, and rake.

  • Sets and shoots grades and alignments as necessary.

  • Installs culverts, digs and clears ditches, and clears rights-of-way.

  • Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition.

  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment; operates two-way radio.

  • Performs equipment maintenance duties such as lubricating, greasing, and checking belts, hoses, air, oil, gas, and other fluids.

  • May load dump truck and haul rock, dirt, mulch, asphalt, and other materials to or from work sites.

  • Fills and repairs road shoulders and participates in ditch and drainage construction.

  • May perform additional duties, such as: flagging traffic, replacing road signs, installing culvert pipes, mowing rights-of-way, cleaning and maintaining roads, ditches and drains, and pouring, spreading, and leveling asphalt, concrete, and gravel.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of standard construction equipment.

  • Knowledge of the hazards of equipment operation.

  • Knowledge of department and safety rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of county geography, including roads and rights-of-way.

  • Knowledge of road drainage in relation to ditching and sloping roads to prevent flooding and erosion of the road bed.

  • Skill in defensive driving techniques.

  • Skill in operating various heavy and light equipment.

  • Skill in performing minor equipment repairs, adjustments, and maintenance.

  • Skill in using various hand and power tools.

  • Skill in performing road construction and maintenance duties.

  • Skill in reading maps, plats, and project plans.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while operating light or heavy construction equipment for extended periods of time, with intermittent standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Possess or able to possess Class A or B Ga CDL License

  • 3 years of experience working with heavy equipment

  • Punctual, dependable

  • Valid state vehicle license required

  • Able to work in a team and produce quality work under tight deadlines

  • Strong communication skills

  • Initiative and strong analytical skills

  • Diligence, prioritization skill, and time management

  • Adaptive learner with a positive attitude
