JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: School Bus Driver
JOB GOAL: Employee is under the general supervision of the transportation director to provide safe, efficient transportation for students to enable them opportunities to gain maximum benefit from the system’s curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Employee must possess a valid, Class A or B Commercial Drivers’ License with endorsements for passengers, air brakes and school bus or Class C Commercial Drivers’ License with endorsements for passengers and school bus. Employee must be at least 21 years of age. Employee must have the ability and stamina for upper body mobility for lifting, bending, driving, and sitting for prolonged period of time; possess proficient written and oral communication skills, submit to and pass a pre-employment physical, police background investigation, fingerprints, and pre-employment drug test.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Employee must pass annual physical examination and random drug/alcohol testing. Employee should have the ability to establish and maintain good discipline and control on the bus. Employee should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with system staff, parents, and the community. Employee should demonstrate physical and mental abilities to perform all essential duties and responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
TERM: 180 days (July through May)
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Wear seat belt at all times while operating the bus
Observes all traffic regulations
Follows and enforces system-wide bus rules and safety procedures and explains them to students
Monitors student behavior on bus and refers problems to the appropriate school administrator by completing a Bus Discipline Referral Form
Attends scheduled discipline conferences as requested by school administrators
After unloading at school or on the route, driver must complete an inspection of the interior of bus to be assured that no student is left on the bus.
Follows time schedule and routing as directed by the transportation director
Refrains from consumption of alcoholic beverages while operating the bus and for an eight-hour period prior to any driving assignment
Keeps bus clean and operational at all times:
Sweeps bus
Conducts pre-trip inspection on bus prior to each trip
Follows prescribed maintenance procedures
Washes exterior of bus and cleans interior of bus (windows, seats, etc.) as needed
Assigns seats to students and maintains a seating chart for all daily routes
Maintains an accurate record of students who are being transported on bus
Makes immediate written report to transportation director of any safety hazard noted on route
Submits reports required by the transportation director in a timely manner
Refrains from leaving the bus unattended at any time students are on board
Supervises the loading and unloading of students
Participates in training sessions with local and state personnel to keep abreast of safety policies and regulations
Displays a loyal commitment to the school system and contributes toward upholding the educational philosophy of the system
Other duties that may be assigned by the Transportation Director or School Administrator
