    Sierra Connell, Youth Program WHEELER COUNTY Sierra Connell, Youth Program Sierra Connell was enrolled in the WIOA In-School Youth program in September 2024. She wanted to gain work experience and needed assistance to complete school. Sierra knew that after graduation, she wanted to attend college and get an education degree. She participated in the WIOA Youth Work Experience program and was placed at Wheeler County High School as a teacher’s assistant. Sierra also completed Occupational Skills Training. She recently earned her high school diploma and signed with ABAC to pursue a degree in Agricultural Education. We are so proud of Sierra for her accomplishments and know she is going to have such a bright future. Sierra shared this about her experience with WIOA. “I aim to be an Agriculture Teacher in the future, and being in this program allowed me to work alongside and assist teachers at my high school. This allowed me to have a clearer view of my future career path and helped me make a more informed decision when deciding on my major in college. Exercise administrative control 'over all departments of the county government under the jurisdiction of the Board. Supervises the performance of county contracts and negotiates contracts and agreements on behalf of the Board. Ensures compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Maintains county records and prepares all required reports. Represents the county in public and at community events and meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications include: Knowledge and/or level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Bachelor's degree in a course of study related to the occupational field; Master's degree preferred. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits and departments of the county in order to direct and coordinate work within the various subunits and departments, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia. Ability to be bonded. Must be detail oriented. Demonstrate knowledge of modern office practices. Ability to use and understand all office equipment. Good communication skills; both oral and written. She had recently earned her GED and wanted to gain work experience and needed assistance enrolling in college. She decided to attend Southeastern Technical College with the hopes of earning a degree in Business Healthcare Technology. During her time in WIOA, she participated in the Work Experience Program and Occupational Skills Training. While attending college, she received transportation stipends and financial assistance with books and supplies. In May 2024, she graduated with her degree in Business Healthcare Technology. Brianna had this to say about her time in the WIOA Program. “WIOA helped me purchase school materials and to have gas money for transportation to my classes. At the time, she was a junior at East Laurens High School and needed assistance to complete her high school education, as well as gain work experience. During her junior and senior years, she was dual enrolled at Georgia Military College, and WIOA provided her with stipends each day of attendance. She participated in Youth Work Experience and Occupational Skills Training. Mariah recently received her high school diploma and has been accepted to Georgia Southern University. She has worked very hard, and we are so proud of her accomplishments. Mariah had this to say, “When I joined WIOA, I was seeking a way to obtain job experience and training, and this program ended up being exactly what I needed. I am so thankful for the opportunities provided by this program. I was able to secure a job that allowed me to improve my resume, which I will need when applying for future job opportunities.     Samanta Dixon, ITA Program TOOMBS COUNTY Samanta Dixon, ITA Program Samanta Dixon, a native of Toombs County, was attending Southeastern Technical College’s Licensed Practical Nursing Program when enrolled in the WIOA program. She was employed part-time with Memorial Health Meadows Hospital but was only PRN (as needed). With the lack of income, the financial burden of completing the LPN program was overwhelming. Samanta needed WIOA assistance to help with her tuition, supplies, and the daily transportation stipend to continue attending school. Since completing the Licensed Practical Nursing program in Spring 2022, she passed her state board exam and was offered a full-time position at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital as an LPN. Samanta has been a great participant, she has worked very hard and overcome obstacles that would have caused many people to give up, but she persisted and achieved her goals! Samanta shared her experience by saying, “Two months before enrolling in the program, I went through a very traumatic experience. I began the LPN program knowing the financial burden it would be. I’m very thankful for WIOA and the help I received with uniforms, weekly stipends, and required testing fees.     Pamela Bradshaw, ITA Program TELFAIR COUNTY Pamela Bradshaw, ITA Program Pamela Bradshaw, a resident of Telfair County, was an employee of Husqvarna when the company closed in 2019. While attending one of the Rapid Response meetings, she learned about the opportunities provided through the WIOA Individual Training Accounts (ITA) program. At that time, Pamela decided to attend Oconee Fall Line Technical College for Business Management. She was enrolled in the WIOA ITA program on December 10, 2019. During her participation in the WIOA program, Pamela received supportive service payments that enabled her to attend training. She successfully completed the program with a 3.90 GPA and earned an Associates Degree in Business Management. After completing training, Pamala has obtained a full-time position with Warner Robins AFB. Pamela had this to say about the WIOA program: “When my employer of almost 30 years closed, I felt as though my world had turned upside down, and I did not know what direction to go. WIOA provided me the opportunity to better myself. I have been able to go back into the workforce with pride and newly acquired skills and knowledge. She was determined eligible as a Dislocated Worker under the National Dislocated Worker COVID-19 Grant. She was attending Middle Georgia State University pursuing a degree in Nursing. Briana needed financial assistance with the costs of the program. WIOA helped cover the expense of tuition, books, supplies, testing fees, and transportation. Briana attended school full time and graduated in December 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. When asked about WIOA Briana replied, “I am so grateful for being accepted in the WIOA program. I received help with the cost of tuition, school supplies, and textbooks. The transportation money I received allowed me to pay for gas commuting back and forth to class and clinicals each week. They also helped me pay for my cap and gown for graduation and provided reimbursement for the cost of taking the NCLEX. Without the help of WIOA I would have had to take out several student loans.     Jacob Bridges, Youth Program WHEELER COUNTY Jacob Bridges, Youth Program Jacob Bridges was a 16-year-old 11th grader from Wheeler County when he enrolled in the WIOA Youth Program in February 2023. He needed assistance gaining work experience and completing high school so he could continue to post-secondary education. Jacob’s goal was to find employment in the mechanic field. Through the Youth Work Experience (WEX) program, which works with local employers to place youth in temporary employment, Jacob was able to work at Selph’s Body Shop. This gave him the opportunity to see firsthand what a career as a Mechanic would be like. Jacob received his high school diploma and was accepted at Middle Georgia State University in the Aviation Mechanics Program. Jacob had this to say about his time in the WIOA program. “I really enjoyed the work experience because it allowed me to work a job that I was interested in. Ensures compliance with all applicable health and safety codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
